All Douglas Park residents are invited to the 35th Annual Douglas Park 4th of July Parade and Picnic. The neighborhood will gather in Monroe Park (14th St S at S Monroe St) at 10am on Tuesday the 4th for judging of the best parade floats, costumes, decorated bikes, and the coveted prize of Mr and Ms Douglas Park. The parade itself starts at 10:30am from Monroe Park, proceeding along S Nelson Street to 18th St S, to S Quincy Street and into Douglas Park for the picnic. There will be live music, a moonbounce and sno-cones.

This is a pot-luck picnic, so bring your finest recipes to share:

Folks with last names beginning with A-M are asked to bring a side dish.
Folks with last names beginning with N-Z are asked to bring a dessert.

Free water and hot dogs provided by the Douglas Park Civic Association.

At noon, there will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

The 2d Annual Carnival de Oruro Parade will take place on Sunday 15 March 2015 on Four Mile Run Dr. The parade will organize on S Shirlington Rd and march west on S Four Mile Run Dr to S Walter Reed Dr. The parade preparation begins at 9.30a with an 11a kickoff. The parade ends at 4p with teardown expected to be complete by 5.30p. Westbound Four Mile Run Drive will be closed for the event.

Due to some unfortunate issues with last year’s parade, the Arlington Special Events Committee has attached some additional conditions to the parade.  These include:

  • Increased police presence along parade route
  • Contracting with County staff to provide support with trash collection, e g, providing trash cans, recycling bins and a trash pick-up service
  • Addition of Arlington Fire Department / EMS medic unit on-site
  • Electronic messaging board placed out along parade route by Arlington police

The parade celebrates Bolivian culture and the Carnival of Oruro,a festival dating back more than 2000 years that takes place in Oruro, Bolivia. It is one of UNESCO’s Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Originally an indigenous festival, the modern celebration incorporates a Christian ritual around the Virgin of Socavón.

The 3d Annual Corso de Santa Cruz—Bolivia Parade will take place on Saturday 7 June 2014 on Four Mile Run Dr. The parade organizes on S Shirlington Rd and marches west on S Four Mile Run Dr to S Walter Reed Dr. The parade preparation begins at 11a with a noon kickoff. The parade ends at 3.30p with teardown expected to be complete by 5p. Westbound Four Mile Run Drive will be closed for the event.
